More Than a Script (MTS) Provider Referral Program

Written by Dharti Patel

Overview

The More Than a Script (MTS) Provider Referral Program enables participating pharmacies to partner with local providers to identify and refer patients who may benefit from pharmacist-led diabetes and hypertension support.

This program standardizes how referrals are received, processed, and acted upon, helping pharmacies efficiently engage patients and strengthen provider collaboration.

Getting Started Pharmacy Guide

Use this checklist to begin participating in the provider referral program:

Step 1: Identify Providers (resources are included below)

  • Identify 1–3 local providers who frequently prescribe to your pharmacy

  • Prioritize providers managing patients with diabetes or hypertension

Step 2: Introduce the Program

  • Send a provider education letter (see provider engagement letter under resources below)

  • Position your pharmacy as a clinical partner supporting patient outcomes

Step 3: Enable Referrals

  • Develop a method for providers to share referrals with your pharmacy (phone or fax)

  • Your pharmacy completes the Provider Referral fax form.

Step 4: Submit and Track Referrals

  • Your pharmacy submits referrals via fax (336-794-1573) to the More Than a Script team

  • Ensure referrals are submitted by the end of the month for processing

Step 5: Engage Patients

  • Monitor DocStation for new patients

  • Engage patients within 1 week of appearing in the platform to ensure the patient remains attributed to your location. If the patient does not appear in your DocStation dashboard by the 12th of the month, please email morethanascript@bcbsnc.com

  • Provide ongoing patient support (MTS program complete, adherence, monitoring, education)
